We are always striving to find new ways to leverage the flexibility of additive manufacturing, so when a toilet seat hinge decided <\/span>it had been<\/span>\u00a0slammed for the last time<\/span>\u00a0there was only one thing to do!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After modeling up the bracket in SOLIDWORKS,<\/strong><\/a> I couldn\u2019t stop thinking if there was a good way to know if a 3D printed component was going to be strong enough? <\/span>Conventionally, 3D printed components have a bad reputation for being brittle. So with nothing to lose, I dove into SOLIDWORKS Simulation<\/strong><\/a>: The Results?<\/span><\/p>\n

The first thing I looked at was comparing a <\/span>conventional\u00a0<\/span>3D printing material<\/span>\u00a0such as ABS<\/span>\u00a0to the\u00a0<\/span>Markforged<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Nylon White<\/span>\u00a0material<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>and the results are pretty straightforward (let’s just say if I don\u2019t want to be remaking this part again in the near future – I used the <\/span>Nylon White<\/span>!)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u00a0<\/span>also approximately simulated<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>using the\u00a0Markforged<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0continuous fiber\u00a0<\/span>material<\/span>\u00a0with the chopped carbon fiber\u00a0<\/span>thermoplastic<\/span>\u00a0Onyx<\/span>– but it was frankly overengineered. Once I realized that I was designing the bracket for a professional weightlifter to \u201cclean and jerk\u201d lift with the seat\u00a0<\/span>at\u00a0<\/span>8,000N of force, I decided\u00a0<\/span>it was time\u00a0<\/span>to move on to printing the\u00a0<\/span>original Nylon White design<\/span>!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Drop the STL model into the MARKFORGED<\/a> Cloud EIGER<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0software,<\/strong> and it is ready to be printed! And even though I simplified the simulation process with assumptions, the worst-case scenario is I have to reprint the part for a couple of hours!<\/span><\/p>\n

And just like that, I replaced a household component in no time.\u00a0Take a look\u00a0at\u00a0the end result<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Additive manufacturing is reshaping the way that conventional device repair works- by decreasing the time waiting for parts, you can get back to the truly important tasks in life. And that applies to machines and fixtures just as much as it applies to a toilet.<\/span><\/p>\n
